INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Drivers in the Indianapolis area will soon have to find alternative ways to get around the city.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, all eastbound and westbound lanes of I-70 from the North Split to I-465 will be closed for 30 days.

Eastbound lanes of I-70 are set to close on April 13 and reopen on May 13. The westbound lanes of I-70 will shut down on April 23, set to reopen on May 23.

INDOT says that due to Gov. Eric Holcomb’s stay-at-home order, traffic has been down 40%. So, the department is using this time to accelerate planned construction on I-70 before high-traffic events resume.

The department suggests the following detours during the closures:

  • From the airport to I-70 EB: Take I-70 EB to I-465 SB to I-70 EB.
  • From Downtown Indianapolis to I-70 EB: Take I-65 SB to I-465 EB to I-70 EB.
  • From I-70 WB to Downtown Indianapolis: Take I-465 SB to I-65 NB to Downtown Indianapolis.
  • From I-70 WB to the airport: Take I-465 SB to I-70 WB on the Southwest side.
