INDIANAPOLIS — New technology on school buses aims to keep your kids safe by preventing crashes and controlling bus speeds.
Clark-Pleasant Community Schools is the only district in the country currently utilizing the cutting-edge technology. They’re testing out the new safety features on two of their buses for free as part of a pilot program with their bus manufacturer IC Bus and Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems.
The technology has several safety features that are focused on crash-prevention and speed monitoring.
The machine will keep the bus from following too closely behind another car and will automatically brake if a car in front of it suddenly stops. It also includes stabilization capabilities that prevent the bus from tipping over if it is involved in a crash.
And if a bus driver goes over the speed limit, the bus will take over and slow itself down. It also beeps at the driver if you get out of your lane.
The school system has also added eight cameras to every bus and a “911 button” for emergencies.
There’s also a new GPS app that alerts parents where their student’s bus is at all times.
The district says they would eventually like to add the technology to all 70 of their buses.
