WASHINGTON, D.C. — Vice President Mike Pence is defending his wife after critics have slammed her decision to teach at private Christian school that believes that homosexual sexual acts are considered unacceptable “moral misconduct.”
The White House announced on Tuesday, Jan. 15 that Second Lady Karen Pence is teaching art classes twice a week at Immanuel Christian School in Springfield, Virginia until May.
Shortly after the announcement, news organizations including The New York Times and ABC News reported that the school bans LGBT teachers and students.
In an interview Thursday with Catholic cable channel EWTN, Vice President Pence says the “criticism of Christian education in America should stop.”
“My wife and I have been in the public eye for quite awhile. We’re used to the criticism. To see major news organizations attacking Christian education is deeply offensive to us,” says Pence.
As part of the employment application at Immanuel Christian School, those working at the school are required to affirm that they are born-again Christians.
In addition, the school’s employment contract prohibits “moral misconduct” including “heterosexual activity outside of marriage (e.g., premarital sex, cohabitation, extramarital sex), homosexual or lesbian sexual activity, polygamy, transgender identity, any other violation of the unique roles of male and female.”
