LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Police in Lafayette say they tried to save a baby who was mauled by the family dog, but it was too late.

It all happened Saturday at a home along Greenbush Street in Lafayette. Lieutenant Matt Gard said the responding officer found the dog standing over one-month-old Julian Connell.

Police say they shot and killed the pitbull-beagle mix dog.

“He could see the baby has some pretty severe injuries and believed the infant need lifesaving aid,” Gard said. “The baby’s brother said the baby boy had just been attacked by the family’s dog.”

Connell’s 14-year-old brother told police the dog attacked his baby brother after it was fighting with another dog in the house. Lafayette Police say they shot the dog because it would not allow police to help Connell.

Detectives are now handling the case.
