INDIANAPOLIS — Students at The Performing Arts Conservatory are bringing attention to teen mental health.

They wrote an original musical, “1 IN 5,” that highlights challenges faced by high school students.  Some of these challenges include peer pressure and depression.

The inspiration for the musical’s name and topic came from a statistic that says 1 in 5 Hoosier high schoolers have seriously considered suicide.

WISH TV reports that the students will be recording a video of their performance, which they will then send to organizations in the community.  These organizations will be hosting a free event Saturday that focuses on suicide awareness and prevention.

The event will be called the “I Need You to Survive Leadership Workshop.”  Amazing Grace Christian Church and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention are working together to help black church leaders and congregations address suicide and mental health.

If you’d like to attend, you can register on the Spenser T. Wilson Memorial Scholarship Fund website.  The workshop will run Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Amazing Grace Christian Church.
