UPDATE: Police are warning people in the area of 1st/Walnut may hear loud bangs and to not be alarmed, but to continue avoiding the area. Franklin Hall will remain closed until Wednesday.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Bloomington Police are warning residents to avoid the area after reports of an armed man in the sewer.

BPD says they are searching the underground sewer system for a man that they believe has barricaded himself and is armed. They say to avoid the area of 1st through 3rd Streets, and Morton to Lincoln Streets.

Multiple agencies, including Utilities, are working in the search to check which areas of the sewer a person could fit in.

Indiana University has police by a sewer exit on Dunn Meadow and Indiana Avenue. IU urges students to avoid that area, and have also begun to evacuate Franklin Hall.

Police say no shots have been fired.
