New Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator, Gus Bradley, made multiple hires this week as he fills out his coaching staff here in Indy. The Athletic’s Stephen Holder reported on Thursday that former NFL safety and Colts player Mike Mitchell will join the Colts as an assistant defensive backs coach. The Kentucky native finished his playing career with Indianapolis in 2018 recording 28 tackles and one interception in eight games. He finished his career with 11 interceptions and 514 tackles across 10 seasons.
Kevin Bowen weighed in on the hiring on Friday’s Kevin and Query:
“I thought he kind of brought an edge, a fire, a level of accountability that, frankly, I think the locker room has lacked over the last few years. Man, I wonder what happened to Mike Mitchell. I wonder if you would just bring Mike Mitchell in here to add that element to your team…I do find it notable that this is a guy that, as a player, brought something to the table that this building lacks right now. It lacks an edge, lacks an amount of fire, a level of public accountability.”
Granted, the assistant DB coach isn’t going to spend a ton of time running meetings and being in front of the whole team, however, the Colts locker room – and coaching staff – could probably use a little fire underneath them. The Colts also hired Cato June to serve as the assistant linebackers coach. June spent time in Indianapolis as a player winning a Super Bowl with the Colts in 2006.
