INDIANAPOLIS — One person was killed and another person was injured in a shooting and crash on I-465 on the west side of Indianapolis, according to the Indiana State Police.

Around 3:30 a.m., officers responded to I-465 NB near Crawfordsville Road for a report of a crash.

“We got a call that the vehicle hit the wall. The crash was actually minor. When officers from the Speedway Police Department arrived first, they found two people. Each of those people had injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. One of those people was taken to an area hospital. The other was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Indiana State Police Sergeant John Perrine.

Police believe the shooting led to the crash.

“There are still a lot of questions to be answered. We’re working through our investigation right now, but preliminarily we believe these shots were fired in another vehicle as they were driving down the highway,” said Perrine.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office has identified the shooting victim as 28-year-old Miguel Emery.

Perrine says there have been 64 incidents with gunfire on interstates across Indiana in 2021. There were 23 in 2020.

All northbound lanes were closed for several hours.
