GREENWOOD, Ind.–A teenager was killed and someone else was seriously injured in a crash that happened in Greenwood Thursday night.

Just after 7 pm, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says they were called to South Paddock Road just north of Olive Branch Road where they found a Volkswagen GTI stuck in a tree and two people trapped in it.

The passenger in the Volkswagen has been identified as Austin James Norris, 16, of Greenwood. Norris was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver has been identified as Hunter Wylie Riffle, 16, of Greenwood. Riffle is in critical condition at a hospital in Indianapolis.

Witnesses told deputies the Volkswagen was going southbound on Paddock Road “at a high rate of speed.”

Investigators are hoping to speak with the driver of a “smaller style light-colored gray SUV with some type of luggage container attached to the top of the SUV.” Police believe that driver may have witnessed the Volkswagen before the accident.

Police are trying to figure out what caused the crash.
