INDIANAPOLIS — An Indiana man has been charged with homicide after he left a drunk woman in the snow and she froze to death in the cold.

Justin Holman, 36, told police he dragged Shanel Smith, 50, into the snow behind an Indianapolis laundromat, back in February. Smith had fallen asleep after drinking in Holman’s car.

Security footage showed Holman dragging Smith out of a black sedan, and tossing her belongings next to her. According to police, Holman said Smith would not wake up, so he pulled her out of the car and left.

On June 29, Holman was charged with reckless homicide, after an autopsy found Smith died of “environmental cold exposure.” A toxicology report found the woman had a blood-alcohol level of .3, nearly four times the legal limit.

Holman was released from jail on a $3,000 bond and is due back in court in October.
