INDIANAPOLIS–The WIBC News team picked up several top radio awards at the annual Indiana Pro Society of Professional Journalists, Monday.

The honors include a first place award for Best Newscast, for the newscast at 8 a.m. on June 1, 2020, following a tense weekend of riots and peaceful protests in Indy. A first place award for Breaking News Coverage was also awarded the team for extended live coverage of the events of that weekend as they happened.

A first place plaque was also awarded for Best Documentary for “Love’s Legacy: Remembering Ryan White”, which aired in May 2020, and featured the story of the Kokomo teenager who changed the world’s attitude, and whose story inspired a more humane way to treat people who have AIDS.

Crime reporting by the team was also recognized with a third place award for In-Depth Reporting on Indy’s violent crime problem.

News Director Chris Davis was recognized as the “Indiana Journalist of the Year”, an award for which the recipient is chosen from all media, including print, television and radio.

“I’m extremely proud to lead this team,” said Davis. “They displayed courage, initiative and ingenuity during what has proven to be one of the most turbulent years in our country’s recent history. I believe they have the audience in mind at all times and are always loyal to the truth, and are mindful of giving people the information they need to stay safe, and to enrich their lives.”
