STATEWIDE–Damaging winds, hail, heavy rain, and isolated tornadoes are all severe weather threats that could be moving through Indiana Friday night.
A system is projected to move in Friday night and stick around through Saturday morning. The severe weather is projected to start around 7 pm.
“The Storm Prediction Center has put a slight risk for severe weather from mainly to Terre Haute to Greensburg and points south,” said Jason Puma, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.
Most of the southern part of the state is under a “slight” risk for severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) says with a marginal risk, isolated severe thunderstorms are possible, but would be limited in duration, coverage, or intensity.
The far southern portion of Indiana is now under an “enhanced” risk. That means the SPC is confident enough that widespread storms will develop, and that these storms are capable of causing significant damage.
Across central Indiana, there is a “marginal” risk. Under this designation, the SPC says scattered severe storms are possible, but would be short-lived and not widespread. Isolated intense storms can’t be ruled out.
Friday begins with close to record-high temperatures for early December.
“In Indianapolis, we’re expecting a high temperature near 60. If you look at points further south like Bloomington and Bedford, highs will be in the low 60s. Then a cold front moves through later in the day. We can expect rain as the cold front moves through, rumbles of thunder, and probably some windy conditions as well,” said Puma.
After this system moves in Friday, Puma expects dry weather to take over Saturday.
“We will get some clearing out, but cooler temperatures for the weekend. We should have dry weather as well. Highs on Saturday will really only be in the 30s. On Sunday, high temperatures will be in the 40s,” said Puma.
Puma says “a warming trend” takes over for next week. Some places will see high temperatures in the 60s again.
