INDIANAPOLIS — Hoosier politicians from both sides of the aisle are responding to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed Wednesday during a rally at Utah Valley University.

Video from the event shows Kirk stagger and collapse after someone fired a shot. A spokesperson confirmed his death just before 5 p.m. Initial reports indicated that a suspect was in custody, but officials later clarified that they had detained someone else and were still investigating.

Kirk had been scheduled to speak at Indiana University Bloomington next month as part of his “American Comeback Tour.”

Indiana lawmakers quickly took to social media to express shock, grief, and condemnation of political violence.

Sen. Jim Banks called Kirk “a warrior and a friend,” saying there is no place for political violence in America. Sen. Todd Young also posted tributes before and after Kirk’s death was confirmed.

Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith described Kirk as “one of the greatest patriots of our time.” Attorney General Todd Rokita called the shooting “horrific” and asked Hoosiers to pray for Kirk’s family.

Former Vice President and Indiana Governor Mike Pence said he was praying for Kirk’s wife and children, calling him “a truly good man.”

Other Indiana representatives, including Jim Baird, Rudy Yakym, Erin Houchin, Marlin Stutzman, Frank Mrvan, and Andre Carson, issued statements condemning the violence and mourning Kirk’s death. The Indiana Democratic Party also released a message denouncing political violence and expressing support for Kirk’s family.

National leaders, including President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and FBI Director Kash Patel, have called for prayers and a full investigation.

The shooting has sparked renewed calls for unity and civility in political discourse, with many Indiana officials urging Americans to reject violence and remember Kirk’s legacy of campus activism and conservative advocacy.
