Indy Wins Big Event as State Budget Cuts Hit Colleges

INDIANAPOLIS — Lucas Oil Stadium will host the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials again in 2028, a big win for the city.
The stadium drew record crowds during the 2024 trials, and an official announcement is expected soon. Gerry Dick of Inside Indiana Business says bringing the event back puts Indianapolis in the national spotlight and brings major benefits.
At the same time, Indiana’s education system is facing tough times. Ivy Tech plans to lay off more than 200 workers after state budget cuts totaling $54 million over two years. The college can’t raise tuition to cover the losses, forcing these difficult choices.
Dick says some universities will have to decide between cutting jobs or raising tuition, while others may avoid both.
A total of 202 people will lose jobs across Ivy Tech’s 45 campuses. Eleven layoffs will come from the Evansville campus on North First Avenue, including three faculty and eight staff members.
