GREENFIELD, Ind. — A proposal from a developer to rezone over 700 acres in Hancock County for a data center has been withdrawn.

The county government announced in a news release Tuesday night that Surge Development LLC pulled its application to change 775 acres of agricultural land for the development project in Buck Creek Township. The data center was planned near Tuttle Orchards, a popular farm destination that has been around for 95 years.

Surge Development recently received feedback from the Hancock County community during an informational session on May 8.

The Hancock County Plan Commission also canceled its meeting scheduled for May 27 following the withdrawal. Three unrelated plan commission petitions originally scheduled for the same day have been rescheduled for a special meeting on June 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hancock County Annex, 111 American Legion Place, Greenfield.

Surge Development released the following statement about withdrawing their proposal:

“On behalf of Surge Development, we want to sincerely thank the Hancock County community for your thoughtful questions, feedback, and engagement during the recent Public Informational Meeting regarding the Hancock County MegaSite Planned Unit Development (PUD).

The discussion has been both constructive and valuable. We’ve clearly heard from the public that additional specificity and clear direction are needed to fully understand the potential impacts and benefits of development in this area. Your input has reinforced our belief that meaningful public participation must remain at the core of this process.
