Is Shane Steichen Still Confident in Chris Ballard?
The talk around the NFL the last 24 hours has been the fact that the Indianapolis Colts are publicly admitting they will be bringing in competition for Anthony Richardson.
In Indianapolis, it has been no secret that Chris Ballard and Shane Steichen were going to be looking for quarterbacks to compete with Richardson. Injuries, inconsistent play, and questions about his drive to become an elite quarterback have all been discussed in two short seasons. The quarterback market this offseason doesn’t contain any obvious names. Joe Flacco and Gardner Minshew felt like obvious names each of the last two years.
Some of the names that the Colts will have to decide from are Justin Fields, Daniel Jones, Sam Darnold, Aaron Rodgers, Jameis Winston, and others. Whenever the Colts bring in one of those guys, does that mean Ballard and Steichen’s confidence in Richardson has wavered?
“We’re just looking for consistency. We’re looking for that consistent player. Going into year three, been banged up the last two years and playing the full seventeen game season will be critical to his success and being consistent with his process day in and day out.” Shane Steichen said on Query & Company Wednesday afternoon.
Ballard essentially said the same thing at his end of season press conference when he was initially asked about quarterback competition for Richardson. However, it will be interesting to see what the competition is and how serious it is.
If the new quarterback in town, for the third consecutive season, beats out the former fourth overall pick, then that is VERY bad news. It means Richardson did not have a great off-season training, the coaching staff hasn’t seen drastic improvements of him as a passer, and that the new quarterback gives the team the best chance to win. I don’t envision this being the case because both Ballard and Steichen strike me as guys who will always believe in the guys they chose.
