Santa Claus Post Office Tradition

SANTA CLAUS, Ind. — A cherished holiday tradition has returned to Santa Claus, Indiana.

The Santa Claus Post Office is once again offering its special holiday postmark. It’s known worldwide as the only post office with Santa Claus in its name, and it receives over 400,000 pieces of mail in December compared to just 13,000 in other months.

Since 1983, the post office has released a unique Santa-themed postmark each holiday season. Local high school students design the artwork for this annual tradition, and this year’s design comes from Aubrey Harpe, now a freshman at the University of Southern Indiana.

“Each year, patrons from all over the world request the celebrated Santa Claus holiday postmark. Many drive into town in order to hand cancel their holiday mailings personally with the renowned picture postmark; others request the special postmark by mail. The endearing Santa Claus postmark is a long-standing tradition for our town, and it contributes to the charm of the spirit each season,” Postmaster Joshua Graham said in a press release.

The 2024 postmark will be available until December 24th, and customers can also request it by mail following specific guidelines, such as ensuring postage is applied beforehand and avoiding bulky enclosures in cards or letters.

Santa Claus, Indiana is also celebrating the season with a series of events during the first three weekends of December. Visitors can enjoy the Santa Claus Christmas Parade, live music at the Santa Claus Museum & Village, and roasting chestnuts at Santa’s Candy Castle.
