INDIANAPOLIS –– Police in Indianapolis are preparing for larger crowds and asking for calm after recent confrontations between Pacers and Knicks fans ahead of Thursday night’s Game 5 watch party at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says tensions between fans have been visible both online and in person. A few videos posted on social media show fans arguing outside downtown bars. In one video, a group confronts a Pacers fan, and one person appears to pull out a gun during the exchange.

“We are an open carry state and that is a long gun and that is allowable under state law,” said IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson. “It’s the actions you take with a firearm. It’s the criminal actions you take with those firearms.”

Police say additional officers will be stationed near the Fieldhouse to monitor activity and help prevent any issues. They’re encouraging fans to enjoy the game without engaging in conflict.

“We want the adults out there to make mature decisions,” Thompson said. “And for our fans, that means we have to do our part in the community to be responsible.”

Thompson said the rivalry between the teams, which dates back to the early 2000s, brings out strong emotions, but added that it doesn’t need to move beyond “simple fandom.”
