STATEWIDE– Following recent severe weather across Indiana, officials are warning Hoosiers: be on alert for storm-related scams.

The Indiana Attorney General’s office says con artists may offer quick repair fixes, then vanish with your down payment or do poor quality work. FEMA never charges application fees. Protect yourself: thoroughly vet any contractor. Get multiple written estimates, check references and insurance, and never pay fully upfront, especially with cash or wire transfers.

Your best defense? Ask for proof of insurance and licenses, get multiple written estimates, and always insist on a detailed contract before any work begins. Also verify the legitimacy of charitable organizations when donating to disaster relife efforts and be cautious of social media donation requests.

Indiana residents suspecting a scam can file a complaint at indianaconsumer.com or call the AG’s office at 1-800-382-5516.
