Suspect Swings Sword, Steals Police Car in Southern Indiana
CHANDLER, Ind. — A woman was arrested after a police shooting and high-speed chase that began in the Warrick County city of Boonville, Indiana, and ended in Kentucky on Monday morning.
Warrick County dispatchers just after 8:50 a.m. Monday received a report of a reckless driver on State Road 62 near Walmart in Boonville.
A Chandler Police Department officer located and attempted to stop the Toyota Corolla car, but the driver, Nina Adalina Devillez, 31, of Santa Claus, Indiana, refused to stop and eventually crashed into a ditch on Heim Road in the Indiana town of Chandler.
Devillez exited the vehicle wearing a motorcycle helmet and waved an object resembling a sword at the officer. During the confrontation, the officer discharged his firearm, striking Devillez at least once. Devillez then fled the scene in the officer’s patrol vehicle, leading police on a chase that reached speeds of over 120 mph.
The pursuit continued into Kentucky, where Devillez eventually crashed the patrol vehicle in an open field near Terminal Road, northeast of Owensboro, Kentucky. After crashing, Devillez attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by a Rockport, Indiana, Police Department officer and a Daviess County, Kentucky, deputy, who used a Taser to subdue her. She was taken into custody without further incident and transported to Owensboro Health Hospital for treatment of her injuries.
The Chandler officer involved in the shooting was put on administrative leave. Indiana State Police are investigating the incident.
