Cold Snap in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS — The cold isn’t going anywhere soon. Subzero temperatures have caused more than 200 school closures or delays across the state.

According to the National Weather Service, this morning’s coldest spots were east of Indianapolis and near the Ohio border.

“I’ve seen temperatures near negative eight near the Ohio border,” said Matt Eckhoff, a forecaster at the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. “Dressing in layers is the most effective way to deal with the cold.”

Forecasters have warned all week that prolonged exposure to the cold could cause frostbite in just 30 minutes.

Southern winds are pushing temperatures into the single digits, and near the Ohio border, it feels below zero. Eckhoff said temperatures will rise into the 20s today.

“With a 20-30 mile per hour wind, wind chills will still be in the single digits,” Eckhoff said. “Unfortunately, it’s not going to feel much warmer, and tomorrow another cold front arrives.”

Eckhoff added that no significant snow or rain events are expected soon, and temperatures next week will be cold but not as extreme as in recent days.
