UPDATE: HSHC says that all the affected kennels have been emptied, but they still urge anyone willing and able to foster a dog to please get in touch.
“Sadly, more dogs will be surrendered to us today, and we must ensure we have room to welcome them and that the heat is back up to acceptable temperatures. Fosters are needed to provide warm, loving homes while we make room for incoming dogs,” said Lily Darling with HSHC.

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) — Two kennel areas no longer have heat at the Humane Society for Hamilton County, and they need the public’s help to protect the dogs from the intense cold.
HSHC made the announcement to ask for the community’s help to foster the dogs as central Indiana is seeing single-digit temperatures, even dipping into the negatives.
If you choose to foster a dog, HSHC will provide food, supplies, and support. Applications can be submitted, and once approved, you will be matched with a dog once they arrive.
The shelter asks you to bring all family members in the house, including any dogs, to have a meet and greet before taking the foster dog home.
“This is a dire situation,” Lily Darling, community engagement manager, said in the announcement. “Our priority is the safety and well-being of the dogs in our care. The loss of heat in these 11 kennels has created an urgent situation. By fostering a dog, even for just a couple of nights, you’re not only helping that animal but also making room for us to move dogs into warm, safe spaces.”
