INDIANAPOLIS — Marco Andretti has taken part in every Indianapolis 500 since his infamous runner-up finish in 2006.

Andretti will be returning yet again this May as he will attempt to qualify for his 20th Indianapolis 500. He finished 25th last year after having crashed on the 113th lap of the race.

Andretti has not finished inside the Top 10 of the race since 2017 when he finished 8th.

This will be Andretti’s fourth year in a row in a one-off role with Andretti Global. He raced full time with the team for the entirety of his career from 2006 to 2020 winning two races.

The closest Andretti has ever come to winning the Indianapolis 500 was in his rookie year in 2006 when he was unfortunately passed by Sam Hornish, Jr. out of the final corner on the final lap of the race.

Andretti sat on the pole for the race when it was held in August 2020 during the COVID pandemic.

The confirmation of Andretti’s part-time seat with the team for the Indy 500, at least for now, quells some concerns from fans that he may lose the ride with the team’s recent change in leadership.

Former Andretti Global co-owner and CEO Michael Andretti, Marco’s father, relinquished his ownership stake within the team in late 2024. Drew Towriss, who is the head of the parent company of Gainbridge which is a primary sponsor for the team, is now the new person in charge of the team.
