INDIANAPOLIS — Snow is expected to develop late Thursday into Friday, starting after the evening commute and continuing through Friday afternoon.

The Indianapolis metro area could see at least an inch of snow, with higher amounts possible in northern Indiana.

“We’ll get cooler, and more snow will come in on Friday morning,” said Aaron Updike, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. “Total snow amounts will range from a few tenths south of I-70 to an inch or more in areas like Kokomo and Muncie.”

Snow showers will continue throughout the day, with brisk winds adding to the chill.

If you’re heading north toward South Bend for the College Football Playoff game between IU and Notre Dame, be prepared for lake-effect snow from Friday into Saturday. Lake effect snow can quickly coat the roads as narrow bands of snow move through concentrated areas.

“You could be in a clear area with no travel impacts, and then 20 minutes later, you’re driving under snow,” Updike said. “It’s different from our typical widespread snow events.”

The weekend will bring drier air on both Saturday and Sunday, with sunshine expected to break through on Sunday.
