INDIANAPOLIS—Prepare for a serious chill tonight as wind chills dip into the single digits and cold air from Canada settles in. The unseasonably cold temperatures will stay until early next week.
“Our average for this time of year is about 46 degrees in Indianapolis, with an average low of 30,” said Matt Eckhoff of the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. “We might see high temperatures below our average low, so that’s a bit unusual for this time of year.”
With the cold comes an increased risk of frostbite, which can happen quickly in these temperatures. Frostbite may cause your skin to feel numb, tingly, or like it’s “pins and needles.” The affected skin can also turn pale, red, or bluish, and feel cold or stiff.
“It could happen in just a few minutes when temperatures are below zero,” Eckhoff said. “We’ll be dealing with temperatures in the single digits, so it might take a little longer for frostbite to set in, but it can still happen relatively quickly.”
Expect 1 to 2 inches of snow in Southern Indiana, with precipitation likely starting in the early afternoon.
“Snow could move in by the afternoon, probably around 3 p.m.,” Eckhoff added. “It looks like we’ll have precipitation chances continuing into Sunday morning, likely ending around sunrise.”
Unlike last week, when snow melted quickly due to warm pavement, the colder temperatures mean any snow that falls will stick. In Indianapolis, residents could see a light dusting.
