PLAINFIELD, Ind. — INDOT is lowering the speed limit on a section of a state highway in Hendricks County.

US 40 between Ventura and Vandalia Blvds is now 45 miles an hour. The speed limit was lowered from 55. This is a section of the state highway where a police officer collided with an SUV in August killing an elderly couple. The officer had been chasing someone.

INDOT spokesman Blake Dollar says even with the fatal crash in mind the change in speed limit is something they had already been discussing.

“While in this case, we’ve looked in this area and have seen the need coming for quite a while, of course, anytime something happens, we do look into that and try to make sure that we keep all of our motorists and pedestrians on our roadways safe,” said INDOT spokesman Blake Dollar

The Hendricks County town of Plainfield grew from 34,905 residents in 2020 to more than 37,000 in 2023.

“Just remember to please slow down, buckle up, and put your cellphones down because that is important when saving lives and being safe and courteous to other drivers out on the roadway,” Dollar added.
