John Mellencamp will be present for the unveiling of a life-sized bronze statue of himself at Indiana University. As part of football Homecoming festivities, the reveal will take place in Bloomington this Friday, October 18. Mellencamp grew up in Seymour, Indiana, and now lives near Bloomington on Lake Monroe.

The presentation is scheduled to take place from noon to 1 p.m. at the IU Auditorium North Garden on Seventh Street.

Additionally, Mellencamp’s statue will join six other bronze sculptures of notable figures with IU connections.

John Mellencamp’s Bronze Statue at IU Joins:

  • Hoagy Carmichael – A legendary musician, Carmichael’s statue sits near the IU Cinema entrance and depicts him at a grand piano. It was installed in 2008.
  • Herman B Wells – The former IU president and chancellor, Wells’ statue, created in 2000, is located in the Old Crescent area.
  • Ernie Pyle – A Pulitzer Prize-winning WWII correspondent, Pyle’s bronze statue, installed in 2014, is outside Franklin Hall.
  • George Taliaferro – The first African American drafted by the NFL, Taliaferro’s statue was erected in 2019 and stands at Memorial Stadium.
  • Elinor Ostrom – A Nobel laureate in Economic Sciences, Ostrom’s statue, installed in 2020, is located outside Woodburn Hall.
  • Alfred Kinsey – Known for his research on human sexuality, Kinsey’s statue was added in 2022 on Woodlawn Avenue.
