JOHNSON COUNTY, IND — Stealing a political sign from someone’s property can lead to criminal charges, according to Sheriff Duane Burgess. He says that political signs are essential to the democratic process, costly, and illegal to tamper with.

“We just want people to leave these signs alone and let them be,” Burgess says. “Many people have Ruing cameras on their doors and around their house. Sometimes, catching these folks and getting that property back is easy.”

Burgess says In Indiana, theft occurs when someone knowingly or intentionally takes control of someone else’s property without permission, intending to deprive the owner of its value or use.

If the stolen property is worth $750 or more, it is considered a Level 6 felony. Values less than $750 are classified as Class A misdemeanors.

“Theft of political signs, or any property for that matter, will not be tolerated in Johnson County,” he said. Burgess. “We encourage our residents to respect the rights and property of others. You will face legal consequences if caught taking or damaging signs.”

Prosecutor Lance Hamner added, “We will prosecute any theft or vandalism related to the political process.  We hope that will not become necessary.  Your local law enforcement agencies wish all a great campaign season in our state and nation during this election year.”
