INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Colts won consecutive games after surviving a late rally from the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday afternoon.
The Colts hit the ground running on their opening drive, scoring the first touchdown of the game courtesy of a Jonathan Taylor rush from two yards out.
After getting off to a quick start, Colts second year quarterback Anthony Richardson left the game with what appeared to be a lower body injury. He would not return.
Enter Joe Flacco. Early on, the veteran looked like his old self, throwing a 4 yard touchdown pass to Josh Downs late in the first quarter. Indianapolis followed that up with a field goal early in the second quarter to take a commanding 17-0 lead.
The Steelers, however, did not go away quietly. A Chris Boswell 50 yard field goal would cut the lead down to 14 at the half.
Pittsburgh would score their first touchdown of the game with 2:53 left in the third. Justin Fields was able to escape the pass rush and use his legs to score a 5 yard rushing touchdown. 17-10 the Colts led heading into the fourth quarter.
Joe Flacco and the Colts responded early in final quarter after the veteran found tight end Drew Ogletree for a 15 yard passing touchdown. The two score lead was once again cut into by the legs of Justin Fields who took it to the house from two yards out the following drive. A Matt Gay field goal from 35 yards out gave Indianapolis a 27-17 lead with 6:03 remaining in the game.
Pittsburgh’s Pat Freiermuth scored a touchdown that would cut the Colts lead down to 3, but the Steelers were unable to complete the comeback.
The loss was the first of the year for the Steelers. The win moves the Colts to .500.
Both Richardson and running back Jonathan Taylor each left the game with injuries. Their status for next week has not been determined.
The Colts play the Jacksonville Jaguars next week on the road. Kickoff is 1pm.
