INDIANAPOLIS–The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says it needs help and the Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police President Rick Snyder thinks he knows of ways to make that happen.

Snyder says right now that Indianapolis is not able to compete with other police agencies such as Indiana State Police and the Carmel Police Department when it comes to pay.

“These agencies now offer a mid-career Police Officer with 15 years of experience $105,000 in Carmel, $112,000 for Indiana State Troopers, and $122,000 in annual salaries for Columbus, Ohio. Indianapolis must significantly raise the salaries of its officers,” said Snyder in a Wednesday news conference.

He also supports an alternative shift scheduled for IMPD based on a 10-hour schedule vs the current 8-hour service rotation.

“With such an alternative schedule, the IMPD can overlap shift staffing at peak demand times throughout the day, thus leveraging their limited resources in the most cost-effective manner, while increasing coverage throughout the city (to all neighborhoods) while also reducing overtime costs on an annual basis,” said Snyder.

He went on to argue that this allows for a better work life balance, mitigates burnout, improves morale, and attracts new officers to the agency.

“In short, staffing goes up, overtime goes down, coverage is equitable across the neighborhoods we serve and protect,” said Snyder.

Snyder says he’s also crunched the numbers on what IMPD Chief Chris Bailey makes. He says Bailey is paid over $100,000 below his peers in other major cities

“We fear we are on the cusp of losing our Chief of Police and other IMPD Executive Staff to other communities who value such leadership and stability,” said Snyder.

Snyder also called on Indiana State Police and other agencies from the region to help IMPD.
