INDIANAPOLIS — The Children’s Museum is hosting Fiesta De La Familia on Sunday to kick off celebrations for Mexican Independence Day, which officially falls on Monday. It will run until September 25th.

The event will highlight the rich diversity of Latin American cultures with family-friendly activities and crafts, including making worry dolls, known as Muñeca Quitapena. These dolls, from the Mayan regions of Guatemala and Mexico, are traditionally placed under a pillow to take away worries during sleep.

Melissa Trumpey, the museum’s public events director, shared that visitors can also try their hand at a Mexican metal art activity where they’ll get a blank piece of metal to inscribe and take home as a keepsake. Other events include learning about the vibrant textiles of the Guna people from the San Blas Islands, along with photo booths where families can snap pictures and decorate frames to reflect on their traditions.

Trumpey emphasized that the museum aims to create meaningful learning experiences for families to enjoy together.

“It’s just really great, we’re all about educating and creating those experiences for children and families to do together,” she said.

In addition to the cultural festivities, Riley Children’s Health will be offering vaccinations for anyone aged 6 months and up.

The celebration begins early Sunday around 10:00.
