INDIANAPOLIS — Police say a 36-year-old man who was injured while getting into the shower last month in Bloomington has died in an Indianapolis hospital.
Briley Shayne Turner, 25, was arrested on August 18th and was charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery. The Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office initially filed those charges after neighbors reported hearing screams from the Kinser Flats apartment complex late around 7:00 that evening.
Police went into the apartment and found Turner lying on the couch, covered in blood but unharmed. They discovered Michael Ray Hodge on the bathroom floor, bleeding from his injuries.
Police believe Turner first struck Hodge with a baseball bat before stabbing him at least nine times with a knife and a tool described as a “tire plug tool with a metal spike.” Hodge told police that the assault came without warning, and the two had not been arguing beforehand.
Turner’s behavior when police arrived was reportedly erratic, with her making strange jerking movements and loud moaning sounds. Court records show she had a history of meth use, including a recent jail sentence for possession in 2022.
Hodge was rushed to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for surgery, but after nearly a month in the hospital, he died on September 11th. A coroner will determine his official cause of death. Turner’s charges may be upgraded to murder if it’s confirmed that his death was due to his injuries.
