INDIANAPOLIS —The Indianapolis Airport Authority has announced record-breaking passenger counts for the first half of 2024, with over 5.2 million passengers passing through Indianapolis International Airport (IND) between January and June.
“First and second quarter data show us that we’re tracking at 10-percent higher in passenger travel than in 2023 and 2019,” said Mario Rodriguez, IAA executive director. “In fact, five out of the 10 busiest days in the airport’s history have occurred in 2024 so far, and four were from 2023.”
The summer travel season also experienced a tremendous increase, with May and June 2024 reaching new passenger traffic records. June became the biggest month in IND’s history, with 995,139 travelers, because of events like the Olympic Swim Trials and continued summer travel demand. The top three busiest months for IND are presently June, March, and May 2024.
Airline seat capacity at IND rose by 7% from 2023, with the airport benefiting from Indianapolis’ hosting of major sporting events and conferences. The IAA anticipates attaining a record 10 million passengers by the end of 2024, with robust travel patterns continuing into the fall and holiday seasons. To prevent delays, passengers should check flight information, arrive early, and obey TSA procedures.
“It’s a consistent sight, especially between 5 a.m. – 7 a.m., with passengers flying out of IND in high numbers,” said Keith Berlen, IAA senior director of operations and public safety. “And we’re doing our part to ensure a positive customer experience through the airport and with a few small adjustments, passengers can ensure a happy travel experience too.
The Indianapolis Airport Authority runs Indiana’s major airport system, which includes many rural airports and the Downtown Heliport. IND generates a $7.5 billion economic effect for Indiana without relying on state or municipal taxes. The airport, which employs over 54,000 people statewide, has repeatedly been ranked as the greatest airport in North America for its convenience, facilities, customer service, and local offers. IND is also home to the world’s second-largest FedEx operation and the country’s eighth-largest cargo facility.
