CAMBY, Ind.–No charges are being filed in an incident where a man from Indianapolis was killed at a Walmart in Camby back on June 2, 2024.

“After a thorough investigation, there was evidence of self-defense found in this case, and the prosecutor has declined criminal charges in this matter,” said Captain Amanda Goings with the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office.

On that day, 34-year-old Matthew Steele was shot by a 19-year-old man in the torso. Goings says the men got into a “verbal and physical altercation” prior to a “firearm being produced and fired.”

The 19-year-old was detained and questioned, but ultimately released. After Steele was shot, he was given medical attention and transported to a hospital in Indianapolis where he died.

This all happened at a Walmart located at 8191 Upland Way at 1:44 pm on June 2. That’s near West Mooresville Road and State Road 67.

Deputies arrived on the scene at 1:53 pm.
