CARMEL, IND — The State Police are now in charge of looking into a situation where a Carmel Police officer shot a man through a car windshield. This incident took place on Sunday night while the police were answering a call about stalking and harassment.

“We recognize that anytime there’s an incident such as this generates questions,” says State Police Sergeant John Perrine. “They are the same questions as we have, and that’s the purpose of our investigation.”

State Police say officers found a man sitting in a blue Dodge Charger on the third floor of an apartment parking garage. When officers ordered him to get out, he refused and then drove forward, hitting a Carmel Police SUV. An officer then fired shots through the Dodge’s windshield.

The officer who fired his gun is on administrative leave following the shooting.

“A car can be used as a weapon in many different situations,” Perrine says. “Our investigators will speak to the officer, and internally, the Carmel Police will decide when that officer is allowed to return.”

The man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition. An officer who helped was also treated at the hospital for a hand injury.

Perrine says the officer’s body camera recorded the entire incident.
