MIAMI — Hurricane Debby has made landfall in Florida as a Category 1 storm.
The National Hurricane Center says Debby came ashore this morning in the state’s Big Bend area near Steinhatchee with maximum sustained winds of roughly 80 miles per hour.
Indiana’s Task Force 1 has been activated and will be heading to South Carolina, which braces to be hit. Debby began dumping rain on parts of South Carolina earlier Sunday causing flooding issues.
Indiana’s Task Force 1 is a crew of top-notch search and rescue experts who help find people stuck in homes and with the movement of aid and supplies to people impacted by natural disasters.
Flooding impacts could last through Friday and are expected to be especially severe in low-lying areas near the coast, including Savannah, Georgia; Hilton Head, South Carolina; and Charleston, South Carolina. North Carolina officials were monitoring the storm’s progress.
At a briefing Sunday afternoon, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned that the storm could lead to “really, really significant flooding that will happen in North Central Florida.”
