Indiana Food Banks Launch Campaign Against Federal Cuts

STATEWIDE– A critical battle for food security is unfolding in Indiana, as nearly a dozen food banks across the state launch an urgent campaign. They are urging Hoosiers to stand up and protect vital federal nutrition funding that feeds hundreds of thousands, currently under threat from proposed congressional cuts.
Essential federal nutrition programs, most notably the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), face potential congressional cuts of a staggering $300 billion over the next decade. This looms as a major threat to food security for vulnerable families across the nation and right here in Indiana.
In response to this impending challenge, Feeding Indiana’s Hungry, the state’s leading food bank association, has initiated a new advertising blitz. Digital ads are currently running in key Indiana media markets, including Indianapolis, Terre Haute, and Evansville, designed to capture public attention and raise awareness about the severe implications of these proposed cuts.
The campaign’s core message is a direct call to action: residents are urged to contact their U.S. Senators and Representatives immediately. Their voices are considered crucial in opposing these significant funding reductions and safeguarding essential food assistance for their communities.
The proposed congressional bill, which includes these potential cuts, is projected to add trillions to the national deficit over the next decade. This is largely attributed to significant tax cuts and broad reductions in federal commitments for crucial programs like Medicaid and SNAP. Such funding shifts could place massive financial burdens on already strained state budgets, directly impacting state agencies and the services they provide to Hoosiers.
As the debate in Congress continues, the active push from Indiana’s food banks highlights the urgency of the matter and the widespread concern for the well-being of the more than 600,000 Hoosiers who rely on SNAP for their meals.
