INDIANAPOLIS — A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department in the death of 34-year-old Joseph Stiger.

Stiger, who was biking at the time, was killed after being struck by an officer’s squad car near the 3300 block of East 10th Street on July 31, 2023. He was initially reported to be in critical condition but was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. The officer, Mark Brown, was responding to a domestic disturbance.

The lawsuit was brought forth by a representative of Stiger’s estate and filed in Marion County. It names IMPD, the city of Indianapolis, Brown, and another driver. The lawsuit, brought forward pursuant to the state’s Adult Wrongful Death Act, claims that Brown “operated his motor vehicle in an unreasonable and unsafe manner.”

Stiger’s estate is seeking damages for medical and funeral expenses and attorney’s fees through a jury trial.
