STATE HOUSE--Gov. Eric Holcomb has chosen one of his education advisers to be the state’s first appointed secretary of education. Dr. Katie Jenner will assume the duties currently performed by Dr. Jennifer McCormick, who is the last elected superintendent of Public Instruction.

Jenner is a former administrator for Madison Consolidated Schools and a former vice president at Ivy Tech Community College.

Jenner will take office in January and one of her primary duties is to oversee the continuation of public school education during the pandemic and recovery.

“This is an incredibly important time for education in Indiana. Dr. Katie Jenner has focused her entire career on investing in students, teachers and staff, and she will continue to build the relationships needed to move our state forward in constructive ways,” said Holcomb.

“As Indiana’s Secretary of Education, Dr. Jenner’s certification, work at nearly every level of education and her remarkable depth of experience will lead our state into this exciting next chapter,” he said.

Jenner earned her undergraduate degree from Transylvania University, her master’s degree in education from the University of Kentucky, an MBA from Indiana State University and her doctorate of education from the University of Kentucky.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to further serve the people of Indiana,”said Jenner. “My priorities are to ensure high quality education for all students and families, and to provide solution-focused support for our teachers and educational leaders. We have great opportunity ahead in Indiana, and I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and work hand in hand with students, educators and stakeholder partners across the state.”
