INDIANAPOLIS — There’s a new tax scam going around that you should know about, says the Indiana Department of Revenue.
This scam uses a text message to try and trick you into sharing bank account information under the guise of receiving a $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.
The text reads:
You have received a direct deposit of $1,200 from COVID-19 TREAS FUND. Further action is required to accept this payment into your account. Continue here to accept this payment…”
The text includes a link to a web address that impersonates the IRS.gov Get My Payment website. If you enter your personal information on this page, it will be collected by scammers.
If you receive this text, take a screenshot and include it in an email to phishing@irs.gov with the following information:
- Date/Time/Timezone the message was received
- The number that appeared on their Caller ID
- The number that received the text message
