INDIANAPOLIS — A member of a local Indy church is collecting old furniture to help International students and refugees who have nothing feel more at home.

Gabe Ramirez began his nonprofit, Indy Internash, to help those in need.

Since the end of 2019, he has collected nearly $5,000 worth of furniture, half of which has already gone to families and students who need it.

“I want to help the people that come here with nothing and they don’t have anyone to go to,” Ramirez said to WISH-TV. “I want to be someone that can connect them with that.”

Ramirez came up with the idea for Indy Internash while he was interning at a campus ministry in Missouri. He noticed that many international students didn’t have any furniture, like desks, lamps, and couches. When he came to Indianapolis he noticed it was similar at IUPUI and surrounding colleges.

He stores most of the furniture at Impact Fairfax Christian Church, where he’s a member and volunteer. He says someone donated a truck, and he can now make stops across the city to collect used furniture.

Right now, he says they’re in need of desks and lamps.
