NEW PALESTINE, Ind. — The defending 5A state champions will not be playing football in Week One of the high school football season this Friday.

New Palestine head football coach Kyle Ralph posted on Twitter Sunday afternoon, that the team would be canceling their season opener against Decatur Central.

“At this time, due to the volume of quarantined players and their unavailability, it has been decided the overall health and well-being of our players, which is our top priority, does not meet the standards of fielding a team this week,” Ralph said.

Several students at New Palestine High School have had to isolate because of a recent outbreak of coronavirus at the school.

Ralph said they will continue to try and hold practices this week with the players they do have available. According to IHSAA rules this year, canceling a game will not be scored as a forfeit.

Ralph is hopeful the Dragons’ can play their Week 2 game against Brebeuf. he Dragon’s can play their Week 2 game against Brebeuf.
