BROWNSBURG, Ind. — A teenager was critically injured when a strip mall that was under construction in Brownsburg collapsed when strong storms moved through Indiana Monday afternoon.

Firefighters with the Brownsburg Fire Territory said the teenage boy was part of a crew with a framing subcontractor working on the structure. He was one of four people hurt when the structure collapsed.

“We had a good amount of thunder and lightning that was visible in the area prior to the storm,” said deputy fire chief Ryan Miller. “Anytime you can hear the thunder and you see that much lightning, we would always encourage anybody to try to take shelter whenever possible.”

The boy is at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis recovering.

Miller said the building inspector for Brownsburg was on the scene after the collapse and will likely investigate as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) might as well.
