ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. — An Indiana Toll Road maintenance worker was hit and killed Thursday afternoon in St. Joseph County, according to Indiana State Police.

Ronald Smith, 61, of Edwardsburg, Mich., was in front of his truck sweeping debris from the shoulder of the toll road when an SUV sideswiped his truck and hit him.

The SUV then rolled over in a ditch.

The 70-year-old driver of the SUV and his 69-year-old passenger were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The emergency lights on the maintenance truck were activated at the time of the crash, according to Indiana State Police. State law requires drivers to move into an adjacent lane or slow to at least 10 miles under the speed limit when approaching emergency vehicles on the side of the road with lights activated.
