ANDERSON, Ind.–A ban on smoking indoors is being considered in Madison County.

On Wednesday, the Madison County Board of Health recommended the ban take effect by October 22. The only exception would be for cigar bars.

The ban would include Hoosier Park Racing & Casino along with all bars and restaurants in the county. In order for it to become law, however, it must be approved by the Madison County Commissioners.

In 2012, state law prohibited smoking in most public places. Casinos, bars, and fraternal organizations were exempt. Since then, some counties have decided to adopt more comprehensive smoking restrictions.

The Board of Health discussed the smoking ban back in May, citing concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

Dr. Troy Abbott, board president told the Herald Bulletin by making an ordinance not take effect for several months, it allows for public input on the proposal.
