MUNSTER, Ind.–Two people were found shot to death inside Munster Community Hospital Tuesday morning.

The Northwest Indiana Times reports a psychiatric patient beat a nurse, then disarmed and fatally shot a retired officer who was working security at the hospital. The Lake County Sheriff told the Times two retired officers ran to help the nurse.

At about 1 Tuesday morning, both officers heard the patient was assaulting the nurse, so they went to the room where the assault was happening. Police say they tried to get the patient off the nurse and the patient was able to grab a gun from one of the officer’s gun belts, opened fire, and hit one of the officers. That shot ended up being fatal.

The other officer shot back and killed the patient.

Munster Police are conducting an investigation with help from the Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force.

Calls to both the Munster Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office from the WIBC Newsroom have not been returned.
