INDIANAPOLIS–Racial injustice and the right to vote were the two primary topics emphasized at the Monumental March in downtown Indianapolis Sunday.

Entertainment impresario Amp Harris organized the Monumental March and Voter Registration rally. Protesters marched from the Capitol, to the War Memorial, and to Monument Circle.

“We can blame the police. We could also blame the legal system, but we also have to blame the people that sit behind the legal system,” said Harris.

Former Indiana Fever All-Star Tamika Catchings, former Indiana Pacer George Hill, and Butler men’s basketball coach LaVall Jordan all spoke at the rally.

“We have got to vote! If you are not registered to vote, you’ve got to get registered to vote,” Catchings said. “I want to be an example for our younger generation and I want to help them figure out, ‘Hey, we need to make change to the legislation. We need to make change by voting, we need to make change by knowing who we’re voting for.’”

Hill’s cousin was killed a little over a year ago in what he called “black on black” crime but said the officers who investigated the killing appeared indifferent.

“I am a living witness that anything is possible if you need just do what you have to do. Yes, there are going to be obstacles, but we’ve been getting past obstacles for 400 years,” said Hill.

Voters were being registered both at the statehouse rally and later on Monument Circle.

“History is happening!” LaVall Jordan said. “Don’t miss it. Jump in, find your row, and let’s get to work.”
