INDIANAPOLIS–A man was shot and killed just before 6 p.m. Thursday at Castleton Square Mall on the northeast side of Indianapolis. Witnesses heard as many as ten gunshots, which caused people to run from the mall. The incident spilled over into the parking lot.

Officer Genae Cook, with IMPD, said several weapons were found in the parking lot. But, officers are not sure if they are related to the murder.

Cook said officers heard the shots as they were patrolling near the mall.

When they got there they observed a person, an adult male on the ground. And they also observed several people running from the area,” said Cook. “As it appears right now, preliminary information leads us to believe that this occurred just inside mall doors. It did not occur inside of any of the smaller businesses that encompass the mall.”

But, it has affected those businesses. The mall was closed after the shooting, and is expected to reopen some time Friday.

“I heard some girls on their phone saying, get out. There some shooting,” said Sean Esters, who was grabbing a pizza inside the mall. He told WISH TV he saw the victim laying there bleeding.

Cook said several people are in custody. But, police did not release their names, and it’s not clear yet whether they’re being charged in the shooting.
