A co-founder of Reddit has resigned from his position and asked the company’s board of directors to replace him with a black candidate.
Alexis Ohanian started the website with Steve Huffman and Aaron Swartz in 2005.
Ohanian said he stepped down from his position because he felt it was the right thing to do for “myself, my country, and my family.”
Ohanian, who is married to tennis legend Serena Williams, said he wanted to be able to tell the couple’s two-year-old daughter in the future what he did to show support to the black community in the US.
In a video posted on his Twitter account, Ohanian, 37, said: “I co-founded @reddit 15 years ago to help people find community and a sense of belonging.
“It is long overdue to do the right thing. I’m doing this for me, for my family, and for my country.
“So, I’ve resigned as a member of the Reddit board, I have urged them to fill my seat with a black candidate.”
The Chicks on the Right discussed Ohanian’s decision on Tuesday’s show.
“Him saying that he wants to be able to tell his children that he did something is fine, but how does this help? And I thought we weren’t supposed to see color. I think perhaps it might be a better example for your daughter if you demonstrated that a person’s color is irrelevant and that all people are equal.”
“Well, he’s also going to be donating his future gains from the company’s stock, starting with Colin Kaepernick’s ‘Know Your Rights’ non-profit. I feel like maybe there are better places to donate, but hey, it’s his money.”
