COLUMBUS, Ind. — A Columbus city employee died Wednesday after his city-owned dump truck was hit by a Louisville & Indiana train.
Brandon Hendershot, 26, had worked for the city since Sept. 2019, according to The Republic newspaper.
The fatal accident happened shortly before 1 p.m. at the railroad crossing at Indianapolis and Long Roads, just south of U.S. 31.
When rescue crews arrived, bystanders were trying to help Hendershot, who police say had suffered “serious, life-threatening injuries”.
Hendershot was taken from the scene by helicopter but did not survive his injuries.
The crash is under investigation.
Columbus Mayor Jim Lienhoop said in a statement, “He was beloved by his family and co-workers. Our hearts go out to everyone who has been a part of Brandon’s life. My wife, Pam, and I both offer our sincere prayers and support to Brandon’s family.”
